Book Club One = Done!

Thank you to everyone who attended today's first MaintainIT book club. We discussed "Meal Plan 1: Setting Up a Wireless Network" from Recipes for a 5-Star Library. 18 people from around the country participated in the discussion. Topics ranged from basic wireless set-up to filtering to splash pages.

It was a nice opportunity to hear how people are using the cookbooks. People asked great questions and contributed ideas based on their experiences, too. I'm looking forward to the next book club! If you're interested in participating, read "Meal Plan 5: PC Reservation/Management Software" (available in PDF format here) and register for the July 29th book club discussion here. It's free and informal and maybe even a little bit fun :)

For more food for thought about wireless management, check out this video clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF3Sa-xAYFk featuring Thatcher Rea and Carla Kaiser from the Basehor Community Library in Basehor, KS. I mentioned this video clip during book club today and promised to post the link here. Thatcher and Carla talk about the wireless management techniques they use in their beautiful new library, including the use of Zone:CD (free, open-source software). It allows them to control bandwidth usage, set time restrictions, and more.

FYI - One of the articles referenced in Meal Plan 1 is, “Open Source Wi-fi Hotspot Implementation” by Jim Feher and Tyler Sondag. It was published in the June 2007 issue of LITA’s Information Technology and Libraries magazine. Citation information for the print article is available in the cookbook, but i wanted to let you know it’s now also available as a free PDF download here http://www.lita.org/ala/lita/litapublications/ital/262007/2602jun/sondag.pdf.

Thanks again participants!
